GTNews: Foreign Exchange Exposure Management: More Control and Fewer Surprises
Original date: May 2010
Companies can lose millions off their balance sheets as a result of market movements in foreign exchange (FX) rates. The recent volatility and turmoil within the FX market has created a heightened awareness of FX risk and an increased demand for transparency around FX exposures. SunGard and FiREapps conducted a global survey of more than 250 organizations to benchmark foreign exchange exposure management practices and FX risk management results. One of the findings of the study revealed that across a broad range of industries, revenue categories, and regions, FX gains or losses had a material impact (where material impacts were defined as +/- 5% of net income) in 59% of the organizations in the study. Watch this webinar to hear the details of the global FX study, including the key challenges identified by executives and FX practitioners and hear how to overcome these challenges and institute best practices in FX management within your organization.

A surging US dollar, combined with unprecedented currency volatility around the globe has resulted in three consecutive quarters of FX losses for most multinational companies.
Faced with budget cuts and lay-offs, most treasury departments are struggling to find a solution to managing the economic impact of foreign exchange to their balance sheets and cash flows.
At the same time CEOs, CFOs and Board Members are asking pointed questions about foreign exchange as they provide guidance to company stakeholders.
FiREapps CEO Wolfgang Koester and Thunderbird School of Global Management Dean John Mathis discuss how companies can get a better handle on their foreign exchange exposure management processes to clearly communicate potential costs and risks.
Learn how corporate treasurers can empower themselves to make a strong business case to streamline FX processes and optimize FX costs and risks–and how CEOs, CFOs and Board Members benefit.
Learn how Google was able to optimize its treasury operations and reduce foreign exchange (FX) costs with a combination of FiREapps and AvantGard Treasury solutions
Original Date: February 26, 2009
Google, the creator of the world’s largest internet search engine, combined two software solutions, AvantGard Treasury for improved cash management and FiREapps for managing foreign exchange exposures, to fulfill its strategic vision for an automated treasury environment that supports complete data, timely analysis and transparent treasury processes.
Prior to implementing these systems, Google was burdened by manual processes that could not provide a complete, real-time view of the data the company needed to efficiently manage cash, or effectively insulate the company from unanticipated foreign exchange-related costs. A main goal for the organization was therefore finding a combination of solutions that could streamline existing treasury processes and provide complete visibility to all foreign currency exposures, timely analysis and greater process transparency. Another requirement for Google was that the recipe of technological systems would not require significant in-house IT involvement for the implementation and upkeep.
Attend this live Webinar to learn why, at a time when every dollar matters, there is no better opportunity to leverage financial software systems that can help your company cut costs and increase efficiency.
During this live Webinar event, you will be able to gain insight on the following:
- How Google identified systems to support its financial vision
- What kind of business case Google made to justify an investment in automation
- How the newly-implemented systems held up to unprecedented real world market conditions
- How Google measures return on investment (ROI)
- Google's vision for the future of treasury operations
How to Cut Costs & Protect Corporate Value in Volatile Currency Markets
Original Date: February 18, 2009
"Foreign currency exposure has gone from being a major tailwind to a major headwind for large U.S. companies. ...negative impact of the strong greenback on financial results is likely to worsen in 2009, many companies have been saying on conference calls."
— David Bogoslaw, BusinessWeek, February 5, 2009
Last week, BusinessWeek's Investing channel writer David Bogoslaw focused his sites on a critical issue faced by multinational companies as the US dollar began to rise suddenly in value at the end of 2008. As Bogoslaw writes, companies like Kraft, Avon and Proctor & Gamble got stung by foreign exchange losses in Q4, while others like Google were able to protect themselves.
In his article, Bogoslaw cited FiREapps on-demand exposure management software as one of the reasons that Google bucked the trend. "Google's ability to dodge the currency bullet may have stemmed partly from its use of software as a service provided by FiREapps," wrote Bogoslaw, "which enables financial officers to see their company's total exposure to foreign exchange effects by pulling all data relevant to transactions involving foreign currencies out of a company's computerized ledger."
